Arizona Diamondbacks defeat the Colorado Rockies 3-2 – MLB Update
Chris Young and Gerardo Parra launched a homer each in the ninth inning, as the Arizona Diamondbacks over-powered the Colorado Rockies 3-2 at Chase Field on Thursday, May 5 to clinch the three-game series 2-1.
The Diamondbacks were under a 0-2 deficit in the ninth inning, when Parra entered the ground and elevated the hopes of his team members by hitting a huge 402-feet long one-run homer on the third pitch he faced.
The Diamondbacks were sure they can get the game into their hands, and therefore, they sent their top prospects Xavier Nady and Chris Young on the plate. Nady struck out swinging, however Young’s bat did the job for the club and he launched a second homer
of the inning tying at 2-2 and forcing the outing to enter into the tenth inning.
"It wasn't a hard hit by no means," Young said, "but with our team, sometimes if you just put the bat on the ball you will find holes. A lot of guys strike out in that situation but he was able to get the bat on the ball and make something happen."
Arizona utilised Joseph Jason Putz in the tenth while the Rockies used Franklin Morales and both remained scoreless. In the top of the eleventh, Arizona introduced David Hernandez and the hurler tossed a perfect inning for his second save of the season.
Morales, on the other hand, gave a single to Russell Branyan and the Rockies relieved Morales with Matt Belisle. The deployment was at the wrong time and cost the Rockies with a losing run.
The Rockies’ reliever, Huston Street who allowed the Diamondbacks the first run off a home-run, did not loss hope and were hopeful to make a come-back in the upcoming games.
Street said, "You get beat sometimes. That's part of the game," Street said. "It's about brushing it off as an individual, as a team. You know, this is one of the first games we've lost in this fashion, maybe the first one all season."
The Diamondbacks’ starter, Ian Kennedy gave two runs on six hits, walked three and struck out five batters over six innings. The relievers, Sam Demel, Esmerling Vasquez, Joe Peterson and Putz did not yield any run in their short spells.
The Rockies’ starter Jason Hammel tossed seven impressive innings and gave just four hits, three walks and four strike-outs. Rafael Betancourt, who pitched a scoreless inning and took out two batters, gave Hammel a strong back-up. However, Street’s two home-runs
were the real blow for the Rockies that washed away all the efforts put in by the pitchers.
The relievers, Matt Reynolds, Matt Lindstrom and Morales did not allow any run in their short innings.
