Arizona Diamondbacks defeat the San Francisco Giants 6-5 – MLB Update
The Arizona Diamondbacks shattered the San Francisco Giants’ dream of a series sweep, as they defeated the division rival in the final meeting of the three-game series 6-5 on Sunday night at Chase Field stadium in Phoenix Arizona.
Despite losing, the Giants won the series 2-1 that also made their third-straight series win in this Major League Baseball season.
The starter Barry Enright kicked off the game with two strong scoreless innings, then Chris Young drove in a lead-off single followed by Stephen Drew’s triple to right-field. It provided the Diamondbacks an early three-run advantage. However, Aubrey Huff
playing as switch fielder for the Giants provided some relief to the club with a huge 380-feet homer.
It was the opportunity for the Giants, but they could not avail it. However, the Diamondbacks’ slugger Justin Upton launched a grand slam in the fifth and widened the lead to 4-1. Realising the game was slipping out of their hands, the Giants retaliated.
Aubrey drove in a single and trimmed the lead to 4-2. Buster Posey followed Huff and went deep left-field for a two-run homer that tied the game at four all. Pablo Sandoval then sent the ball out into the stands in the next pitch and acquired a one-run lead
for his team.
It seemed as if the Giants would make their first sweep since 2008, but the eighth inning shattered their dreams. First, Ramon Ramirez tossed eight balls of his fifteen pitches and walked Xavier Nady, and then Affeldt, relieving Ramirez, tossed a loose pitch
and allowed Ryan Roberts a tying RBI. The game went into extra innings after remaining tied in the ninth.
The closers from both sides shined and did not allow any hit until the twelfth inning. However, the Diamondbacks’ closer Josh Collmenter won his first game, as Upton on second and Chris Young on first, Drew chipped in a single to right-field and prevented
the club from receiving a third straight loss.
Collmenter pitched two shut-out innings, remained hitless and managed two strike-outs. It was what Collmenter had dreamt for in his life. "I couldn't have dream for it to go better, to get the walk-off win and celebrate with the rest of the team," said Collmenter.
Huff, who drove in one run, seemed excited with the outing he played. Aubrey said, "Games like that it takes a little two-hopper through the hole and you get the game done. It was one of those tough beats but we won three series in a row and that's all you
can ask for."
Both starters remained expensive. The Diamondbacks starter Barry Enright pitched five innings, allowed four runs and two walks and made five strike-outs. Enright also consumed two home runs that sent him to a 6.23 ERA. On the other hand, Madison Bumgarner
also consumed four runs, but on eight hits remained unfortunate to have more than two strike-outs.
