Arizona Diamondbacks fail to complete comeback, lose 2-3 to Milwaukee Brewers – MLB Update
The Arizona Diamondbacks failed to complete a historical comeback in the National League Division Series, losing 2-3 in Game 5 against the Milwaukee Brewers on Friday, October 7 at Miller Park in Milwaukee, Wisconsin to crash out of the playoffs.
Diamondbacks lost the first two games of the series at this ballpark, but then regrouped in time to win the next two at Chase Field in Phoenix, Arizona. They, however, did not fall easily in this game, fighting till the end to give the Brewers a tough time.
Justin Upton gave the visitors a handy one-run lead in the third inning, smashing one 388 feet towards right-field. The offence failed to capitalise on this lead and the Brewers were quick to make-up for the home-run, scoring the equaliser in the fourth
inning before registering a lead in the sixth inning.
Nyjer Morgan scored the equaliser for the home-team before Ryan Braun safely scored the second run to impose pressure on the D-backs. However, the champions of comeback had one final say in the ninth inning when Gerardo Parra scored the equaliser and subsequently
pushed the game to the tenth inning.
John Axford came out strong in the tenth for the Brewers after leaking the equaliser. He pitched a perfect inning under immense pressure to not only seal the game, but to ensure the Brewers a berth for the Championship Series. Even after a rough outing,
Axford bagged the win.
J.J. Putz could not hold things together in the tenth for the D-backs, leaking a run and taking the loss.
Arizona’s centre-fielder Chris Young could not believe his luck after the loss and stressed that he is still not convinced that the season is over for him.
Manager Kirk Gibson agreed with Young and added, "This was a great baseball game today. I'm not happy to be on this end of it. Yet I'm proud of my team and they played true to the way they played all year."
Gibson pointed out that although his team fought brilliantly till the end, the Brewers cashed in on their opportunities and deserved to win.
The Brewers will now play against St. Louis Cardinals in the NLCS to fight it out for the pennant.
