Arizona Diamondbacks get Heath Bell from Miami Marlins – MLB News
Heath Bell becomes latest victim in the response of Miami Marlins to their disappointing end of 2012 Major League regular season. He has been traded to Arizona Diamondbacks in exchange for infielder Yordy Cabrera.
Bell had fairly forgettable time in the season. His late-innings meltdowns caused failures for the side on a number of occasions.
He was obtained by the Marlins last year as part of their offseason spending spree. Along with two other players, he was added on the roster with the hope that the performance of the Marlins will improve substantially due to him.
Unfortunately, Bell turned out to be the weak-link in the side as opposed to leading the team to victories late in the innings.
At the beginning of the season, he carried out the closing job. Unable to help the team in the penultimate moments of the games, he cost defeats. As a result, he forced the Marlins’ manager Ozzie Guillen to remove him as closer and introduce someone else
in his place.
Although Bell was given opportunities time-and-again, he could not impress his manager.
After the conclusion of the season, Bell made remarks about his manager, blaming him for not trusting in his abilities. He also accused him of not living up to his promises and the lack of communication with players while making decisions.
Arizona’s general manager, Kevin Towers is mindful of the fact that Bell floundered throughout the recently concluded season. He believes it as one of the reasons why they managed to clinch the deal with the Marlins.
''He had a down year. That happens. Guys have down years,'' Towers said. ''Heath had a down year. That's why we were able to make these deals.''
More often than not, what happens is that as soon as a player leaves the Marlins, he begins performing well. In this regard, it will be interesting to note as to how he can help the Diamondbacks next year.
Bell will be looking to upgrade his career record by putting up consistent shows on the mound in the upcoming season.
Given the fact that he boasts credentials for becoming a reliable closer for any side, it can be expected that he improves vastly by playing with the Diamondbacks.
