Arizona Diamondbacks looking to increase their pitching depth – MLB News
It looks like the Arizona Diamondbacks are hoping to increase their pitching depth with all the recent off-season activity they have been showing.
The Diamondbacks traded for veterans Kam Mickolio, David Hernandez and Armando Galarraga. The team is looking to inject some new life into their pitching line-up for the 2011 regular season.
Armando Galarraga was obtained from the Detroit Tigers as he has not been able to perform at the level that Arizona is expecting of him. It looks like the team is going to strengthen the back-end of their bullpen with some of these veteran pitchers. This
will undoubtedly increase the pitching depth tremendously.
David Hernandez was acquired in exchange for Mark Reynolds to the Baltimore Orioles. He has an impressive fast-ball capable of reaching 98 mph. The Diamondbacks will be hoping that Hernandez can maintain that same lightening quick pace during the 2011 regular
season to help the team from the mound. Hernandez is also been noted to have an amazing curve ball which has impressed many in the baseball circles.
“Rebuilding the bullpen was a priority. I like power arms. We had (Hernandez) up to 98 (mph),” GM Kevin Towers said.
“We’re looking to augment our offense,” he said. “I don’t think we’re necessarily done. We see left-handed starting pitching creeping into our division and we wanted to get some right-handed bats in there.”
During his time with the Baltimore Orioles last season, Hernandez managed to get an 8-8 record with an ERA of 4.31 and 72 strike-outs.
Arizona seems to have done a good job by acquiring Kam Mickolio as he has an ERA of 4.31 and is a tremendous relief pitcher. The team will be looking at Kam to put in a decent relief effort for the team during the 2011 regular season.
With all these pitching acquisitions, it is obvious that the Diamondbacks are focusing on their pitching depth and are working hard to mix both veteran and new pitchers in their bullpen. The team is desperate for a good showing during the regular season
with the hope of making it into the playoffs.
