Arizona Diamondbacks overpower Milwaukee Brewers 10-6 to level NLDS – MLB Update
After a series of comebacks in the regular season, the Arizona Diamondbacks made yet another comeback to subdue the Milwaukee Brewers 10-6 in game four of the National League Division Series and subsequently level the five-game set at two-each on Wednesday,
October 5 at Chase Field in Phoenix, Arizona.
If the D-backs prevail in game five and go through to the NLCS, this comeback will surely be counted among the best in the history of the Majors. Two games down, no one would have imagined a comeback for the NL West Champions. However, here they are, producing
two Grand Slams in two games to overpower the strong offence of Brewers.
Ryan Roberts unleashed his arms to hit a Grand Slam before Chris Young’s solo home-run effort in the first inning imposed a thumping four-run lead over the NL Central Champions. Earlier, Ryan Braun’s RBI towards centre-field had allowed Jerry Hairston Jr.
to score the first run for the Brewers.
Young scored three runs in the game, including a two-run home-run in the seventh inning to become the first player in the franchise’s history to have a two-homer post-season game.
"We're not going to give up, even when we're down 2-0," said Young. "In the clubhouse, we still believed we could do it. At the time our goal was to get back to Milwaukee. We've reached that, so it's a toss-up now."
The Diamondbacks became only the second team in the history of the playoffs to have consecutive grand slam games, joining the 1977 Dodgers. Paul Goldschmidt smashed a grand slam in game three for the D-backs.
With bases loaded, Roberts did not go overboard. He said, "In that situation, I just wanted to get on base, not try doing anything too much. Just see a pitch in that I could drive and put a pretty good swing on it."
Randy Wolf could last for only three innings on the mound for the Brewers. He gave away seven runs amid eight hits in this stretch to lose the game, finishing at an ERA of 21.00. Arizona’s starter Joe Saunders was also removed after a short spell of three
innings but Micah Owings pitched two resolute innings thereafter to win the game for the home-team.
