Arizona Diamondbacks retaliate to defeat Milwaukee Brewers 8-6 – MLB Update
A sensational effort by the Arizona Diamondbacks saw them cruise past the Milwaukee Brewers 8-6 at Miller Park in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on Monday, July 4.
The Diamondbacks came from five runs behind to first eradicate the deficit and then impose a two-run lead on the Brewers. A sleek performance by Arizona’s relief pitchers helped their cause in halting the flow of runs by the Brewers who gathered five in
the fourth inning. The Brewers were not allowed a single run after that.
Milwaukee opened the scoring for the game helped by Casey McGehee’s effort in the third inning. Miguel Montero was quick to reply for the Diamondbacks at the top of the fourth inning as he let loose his arms for his tenth home-run this season. The hit distanced
391 feet. McGehee is now one shy of 50 career home-runs.
The Brewers then went all-out in the fifth inning which turned out to be a run-fest for Milwaukee’s side. Corey Hart’s 436-feet home-run initiated the scoring, followed by Shaun Marcum’s homer which allowed Prince Fielder and Jonathan Lucroy to add their
first runs of the game with McGehee adding his second.
It was Daniel Hudson’s ineffectual pitching rather than Brewers’ hitting which caused the damage. Hudson started for the Diamondbacks but his lacklustre performance can be gauged by his statistics, going for eight hits and six runs in four innings at an
ERA of 3.75. He committed five errors and managed just three strike-outs in an ordinary display of pitching.
Hudson was immediately replaced by a string of relief pitchers, all pitching an inning each. Sam Demel was the pick of them, not conceding a single hit and managing seven strike-outs of a total of ten pitches. He was duly awarded with a win, his second this
season.
This turnaround in the pitching of the Diamondbacks was accompanied by their hitters connecting regularly, scoring in each inning from the fifth to ninth. Wily Mo Pena was again among the scorers and fitting to his slugging percentage of .590 this season,
it came as a home-run in the fifth inning. Justin Upton and Sean Burroughs added two in the sixth inning before Ryan Roberts added another in the seventh inning to leave the deficit to just one-run.
Burroughs held on to the pressure in the eighth inning when he levelled the score with his second run of the game and the Brewers went into disbelief with the effort put in by their opposition.
John Axford came to the mound for the Brewers to try and halt the binge of runs but the momentum had already been shifted and Axford failed to hold the game, allowing two runs in the last inning. Kelly Johnson and Chris Young were the proud run-getters for
the visiting side. Axford lost his second game this season.
Arizona is now one game ahead in the three-game series. The second game between the two sides is scheduled for Tuesday, July 5.
