Arizona Diamondbacks’ short-stop Stephen Drew’s status doubtful for Opening Day
The Arizona Diamondbacks experienced short-stop Stephen Drew, who was injured last season as he slipped on home plate and fractured his ankle leaving the rest of the season in utter pain, is still not recovered fully and possibly will not be playing the Opening Day game.
Diamondbacks’ general manager Kevin Towers stated recently regarding Drew and his late injury that still needs some time to fully recover.
Towers said, “I would imagine we'll have to take it rather slowly with him in spring training, I'm hopeful he'll play in some games in spring training. Will he play in our opening game? I don't know. I haven't laid eyes on him other than to see him on doing some agility drills.”
Later, Diamondbacks' manager Kirk Gibson said, “I really have no idea, we’re going to go to spring training, I know that if I don't feel he's totally ready, I'll push making sure that he's ready to go the way we want him to go.”
Playing almost his entire career with the Diamondbacks so far, Drew is certainly a talented player playing at shortstop position. He has always performed with a big heart. Last season, before injuring himself, he played relatively consistent and did not show any loop holes in his game.
Hitting at an average of .252 along with five homers, 45 RBIs and .317 OBP, Drew received much appreciation from several experts. Though his career hitting at .270 along with 70 homers, 321 RBIs and .330 OBP is also very strong but he will be looking to further improve his career stats in the upcoming season.
Seeing his last season's performances, experts believe that Drew’s arrival in the Diamondbacks’ roster is essential. Last season, the Diamondbacks could not perform well and lost many games down the stretch late in the regular season. However, with Drew’s potential arrival, they have a good chance to compete against some top teir teams. Though no one is sure on his early recovery, the Diamondbacks will be hoping that he comes back into the team as soon as possible.
