Arizona Diamondbacks shortstop Stephen Drew not ready for Opening Day – MLB News
The Arizona Diamondbacks’ experienced shortstop Stephen Drew is still recovering from his ankle injury and will not be part of the team on Opening Day.
The team management has announced recently and explained the situation regarding Drew, but those comments are yet to be published officially in the media.
However, Tim Kurkjian, who is a renowned sports journalist, has commented on a social media website Twitter explaining, “SS Stephen Drew won't be ready Opening Day. Willie Bloomquist takes over. DBacks were 37-21 when he started at SS last year.”
On his rehabilitation process, Drew has also said in the media, "We've been doing some football stuff -- keeping an eye on the ball as you run. That way, you're not really thinking about the ankle, but thinking about catching the ball."
Drew, a six-year veteran, knows how crucial this Major League season is going to be for him. Last year, when he missed the entire rest of the season after getting injured in July, the Diamondbacks suffered some heavy losses. They surely missed Drew’s presence and felt his need badly. Some say if Drew would have remained in the roster, the results of the last season will be entirely different for the Diamondbacks.
Though Drew will not be able to play on Opening Day, but he is determined to come later in the season. His team is also supporting him on his potential return. Lately the Diamondbacks President and CEO Derrick Hall spoke in the media and explained about Drew’s recent condition.
Hall said, "He's making great strides, the other day he told [General Manager] Kevin Towers he feels great, which is such a good sign because we put him through a lot of work. He's getting close to game time where he'll be able to play in some games.”
It is a good sign that the whole Diamondbacks’ management, coaches and managers are with Drew and hoping for his potential return next season as they know how important his game is for them while the Diamondbacks also do not want any repetition of last year’s performance where they could not perform up-to the potential.
