Arizona Diamondbacks shutout Pittsburgh Pirates 2-0 - MLB Update
The Arizona Diamondbacks were successful in making their way out of the series sweep by beating the Pittsburgh Pirates in the last of the three game series 2-0 at the PNC Park in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on June 9.
The Diamondbacks’ bull-pen took out their best for the night as they barely escaped the series sweep humiliation. For the Pirates this was a letdown as they were aiming to get something like the dramatic win they acquired the night before.
"We're in a ballgame to the end and we pitched so effectively," said manager Clint Hurdle. "You make one mistake; a guy hits the ball out of the ballpark. We were on the other side of it the other night. The longer you can stay in games, the longer you stay
in them and hopefully the momentum turns your way. "
Just the night before, the Pirates and the Diamondbacks battled it out in a 12 inning game from which the Pirates eventually came out victorious. Even in this game, the Pirates seemed to have the advantage, but by the time the game ended, it was a different
story altogether. As the game ended, both bull-pens were more than exhausted and maybe that is a factor in the poor offensive performance from both teams in this game.
Even with the victory Arizona’s offense or the Pirates for the matter was anything special. The game was truly a pitching duel and aces from both sides unleashed their best when on the mound.
Josh Collmentor is still in his rookie season high as he managed to impress everyone, yet again. He pitched more than five shut-out innings and after his departure as Joe Patterson, David Hernandez and Owings successfully complete the sixth shut-out of the
season from Arizona’s side.
Collmentor has an ERA of 1.12 and has only allowed four runs in the six games where he has started and scored his 14th consecutive scoreless inning in the game. He left the mound after unleashing 102 pitches.
The Pirates made their impact on the mound as well in the form of Jeff Karstens who delivered shut-out innings of his own. He barely let four hits pass him by while pitching. In the last 25 innings that Karstens has pitched which span over four starts, he
has let a mere three runs pass him by while maintaining a 1.05 ERA.
Chris Young was the only hitter capable enough to belt out a run in the eighth inning during the game.
