Arizona Diamondbacks sign Brandon McCarthy – MLB Update
The Arizona Diamondbacks’ top management has taken a bold step after coming back from 2012 Major League Baseball’s annual Winter Meetings in Nashville with the signing of star starter Brandon McCarthy. It will not only give the Diamondbacks confidence to
play offensively next season but it will also give them a good backup in the starting rotation.
“We’re able to acquire what we feel is a frontline starting pitcher without having to give up any of our pitching depth,” Towers said. “That’s not to say we won’t still have trade discussions with other clubs, but we’ve obtained all of our needs and, if
anything, we have excess now.”
“The one thing we don’t know is how many innings to expect,” Towers said. “He’s logged 170 before, but I think if we get 150 to 170 innings out of him with the pitching depth that we have, we should be in a good place.”
The Diamondbacks’ general manager Kevin Towers, who is a key negotiator behind this deal, is certainly now feeling much pleased and hoping a great new beginning with the former Oakland Athletics’ pitcher.
Towers, since the start of 2012 offseason was trying hard to bring some good pitchers for the team. Earlier news also came that if Towers had to trade some of the Diamondbacks’ prospects, he will do so to add more fire power in the starting rotation.
Now with the signing of McCarthy, the Diamondbacks certainly will go into the next season fully prepared. McCarthy has already proved his extraordinary pitching skills and now with the Diamondbacks, he just needs to remain healthy.
As his health issues have been giving him slight troubles since his arrival in the league. On the whole, he is a talented player and considered one of the most talented pitchers in the entire league.
Last season, with the Oakland Athletics, he remained consistent with 3.24 ERA along with 8-6 win-loss, 73 strikeouts and 1.25 WHIP. Not only in the last season, but he is also quite consistent with his career ERA of 4.02 along with 37-39 win-loss, 447 strikeouts
and 1.28 WHIP.
