Arizona Diamondbacks tired of waiting for pitcher, pick up Jason Kubel with two-year deal -MLB Update
It looks like the Arizona Diamondbacks got tired of waiting around for the perfect pitcher to come around and join their team as the franchise chanced their direction and singed on a bat, outfielder Jason Kubel, to a two-year deal worth over a reported $15
million, Monday morning, December 19, 2011, which is also pending a physical in the afternoon before the will be declared final.
The Diamondbacks know that the people around the in the Major League Baseball (MLB) were not expecting the move at all, but feeling the need to improve their club in every little way possible, they thought it should be done without delay.
"We still want to improve our club instead of sitting on our hands," Diamondbacks general manager, Kevin Towers, said. "We didn't want to miss out on all the good players that are out there. We saw (Kubel) was still out there and we went after him."
It is known that Kubel, a 29-year-old player who has spent the last seven seasons with the Arizona club, will be signing on with a different team for the first time in his career, making the situation a whole lot interesting.
The player did not have the best of seasons in 2011 but before that, his 20-plus homer seasons are well known along with a hitting average of .273. Last season, he had 12 homers and.766 OPS in 366 at-bats.
The surprising part was that the Twins did not express in interest in the Kubel position but rather were preferring pitchers from any way they would come. It has also been rumoured that Kubel could be used to make a trade for a valuable pitcher but Towers
denied that idea and thinks he could be of good use to the team or that left fielder Gerarado Parra could be sidelined.
"As you well know, nobody is given a job here," Towers said. "Parra is still very much a part of this club and was a big part last year. You can't have enough good players. You have to have depth. We did that with the infield, too.”
One thing is for certain that Kubel is not the stop to Towers' search for a perfect pitcher.
