Arizona Diamondbacks vs. Milwaukee Brewers: NLDS Game 4 – MLB Post Game Analysis
The Arizona Diamondbacks continued with their momentum from game three to annihilate the Milwaukee Brewers 10-6 in Game 4 of the National League Division Series on Wednesday, October 5 at Chase Field in Phoenix, Arizona.
Diamondbacks lost the first two games at Miller Park in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. However, they did not let the opportunity of playing at home slip away and won two consecutive games, backed by some intense hitting, to draw level with the National League Central
Champions. Now, they are in a position to complete yet another comeback after dramatically overthrowing the San Francisco Giants in the regular season. If the D-backs manage to prevail in Game 5, this will probably go down as one of the greatest comebacks
of all-time.
The confidence in their dugout reflects their performance on the field. After smashing two home-runs in the game, Chris Young said, "We're not going to give up, even when we're down 2-0. In the clubhouse, we still believed we could do it. At the time our
goal was to get back to Milwaukee."
Young became the first player in Arizona’s jersey to have a two-homer game in the history of post-season. The records did not stop to tumble here. With bases loaded in the first inning, Ryan Roberts held his nerves to hit a Grand Slam, replicating Paul Goldschmidt’s
effort from game three. The D-backs became only the second team in the history of baseball to have two consecutive Grand Slam games in the post-season, joining the 1977 Dodgers.
Expressing his feelings after the game, Roberts clarified that he did not try to do anything extra and just wanted to get on base safely. He stated that as soon as he saw that pitch, he felt it was there to be hit. Young’s solo home-run in the first inning
right after this effort gave the Diamondbacks back-to-back homers for the first time in their postseason history.
Goldschmidt could not slam another homer in this game, but went 2-for-3 and scored two runs, improving his batting average to .455 in the post-season. Roberts’ average soared to .375 after he ended the game 1-for-5, driving in four-runs. Young has impressed
in the four games as well, averaging .429 thus far and going 2-for-3 in the game, driving in three runs and scoring three to see his average soar to .429.
Brewers’ manager Ron Roenicke, however, believed that his starter was responsible for the loss more than Arizona’s offence. He said, "I don't think it has anything to do with the D-backs. I think Wolfy, when he gets in trouble, his location isn't there,
and you saw that in the first inning."
Randy Wolf allowed seven earned-runs in three innings to lose the game for the Brewers and finish with an ERA of 21.00. The relief staff could not help much either because the damage had already been done. The Brewers needed their offence to fire, but Ryan
Braun, Prince Fielder and Rickie Weeks could only produce two hits in 13 combined at-bats.
Going into Game 5, if this situation continues, the Diamondbacks might be on their way to the Championship Series. Historically supporting this proposition, the last time three of the four Division Series went to the stretch, the D-backs went all the way
through to win the World Series.
