Arjen Robben unsure of return date
Bayern Munich winger Arjen Robben has revealed that he is not sure when he will be able to make a return from injury.
The Dutchman initially sustained an injury while preparing for the 2010 FIFA World Cup with his country. He played no part in the first two matches at the tournament, but appeared to have made a full recovery, playing in the following five games during Holland’s
march to the final.
But after he returned to the reigning Bundesliga champions, it was discovered that there was a five-centimetre tear in his left hamstring — the very muscle he had injured prior to the tournament.
An initial prognosis had suggested that the 26-year-old would be able to return to action after the Bundesliga’s winter break. But the player admitted on Tuesday that he had no idea when he would be able to make a return to playing.
He told German daily newspaper Bild, “I cannot say whether it will take four weeks, or two or three months.”
With Robben on the sidelines, Bayern has struggled to rediscover the golden form that saw them win the Bundesliga and German Cup last term, and reach the final of the UEFA Champions League.
They have managed to score just five times in their six matches so far in the league, as they try to adapt to life without Robben and fellow winger Franck Ribery, who is struggling with an ankle problem. The defending champions are now ten points off the
pace set by early leaders Mainz.
Robben weighed in with his thoughts over Louis van Gaal’s side and their dismal start to the campaign, saying that, “The mentality is now important. Dortmund is now seven points ahead - the distance should not be so great."
