Arjun Atwal gets off to slow start, as he misses cut at Puerto Rico Open
Arjun Atwal missed the cut at the Puerto Rico Open presented by seepuertorico.com, due to a slow start and poor scoring.
The 38-year-old Indian star was unable to record better scores. He finished the first round at 74 and the second round at 72, at the Trump International Golf Club, Rio Grande in Puerto Rico.
He faced elimination on Friday, due to over-par scores in both. The minimum standard of qualification was 145 strokes, whereas Atwal recorded 146 on Friday.
The competition was tough and all the field members played tremendously well, however, Atwal was unable to compete against the others.
He recorded 7 birdies in total, but 5 bogeys and 2 double bogeys became the reason of his elimination.
There are many other players who also failed to make the cut by scoring one-stroke over par.
Some renowned players who faced disqualification include American Kyle Thompson, Venezuela’s Jhonattan Vegas, David Duval, Nicholas Thompson an American, Hunter Haas and the Swedish Daniel Chopra.
George McNeill is the proud winner of the tournament. He recorded 16-under 272 and defeated Ryo Ishikawa impressively by two-stroke lead.
McNeill’s enormous scoring and several birdies took him at the top position of the leaderboard.
Atwal performance in 2012 is poor. As he started his current PGA tour season in January at Sony Open in Hawaii, but unfortunately missed the cut by scoring 141.
Then he appeared at the Humana Challenge in partnership with the Clinton Foundation and displayed an improved performance.
He scored a 5-under par and 211 in three rounds, but lost the cut again due to the high scoring average from the other field members.
His scoring at the Humana Challenge has been the best up till now, as he has played seven tournaments in total this year and devastatingly missed the cut in all.
There are very less chances for him to recover now. His performance is not up to the mark. He needs to take extra practice hours to improve.
He will be playing other PGA staged tournaments in the near future. If he again continues his poor performance, then it will be difficult for him to qualify for the next year PGA Tour season. Hence, the need of the hour is to show some impressive finishes.
