Arjun Atwal leads McGladrey Classic after 36 holes
Indian golfing star Arjun Atwal shot a magnificent seven-under 63 to lead the McGladrey Classic by one shot. Trailing the Indian is the US Ryder Cup captain Davis Love III.
Love shot four-under 66 to end up with nine-under after 36 holes. Davis Love III was joined by Jim Furyk at the second position after the veteran shot five-under 65, on Friday.
Arjun needs a top-three or a top finish, at least, to secure his tour card for the next season. Currently, he is at the 175th position but he needs to finish inside the top-125 to be able to play on the PGA tour next season.
McGladrey Classic is the penultimate event on the PGA Tour and it provides the last chance to those who need money to finish inside the top-125 on the money tour list.
Shooting ten-under after 36 holes has given a big chance to Arjun to not only claim his first victory on the tour in two years’ time, but also guarantee his tour card for the 2013 season.
The world number 573 got off to a flying start at the Seaside course on Friday. He birdied four times on the first five holes.
"Yeah, I'm in a desperate situation," Atwal said. "I've got no choice to either win or finish in the top two, I think my caddie figured out. So I've just got to grind it out".
Atwal played like a champion on Friday. He had eight birdies and a bogey. A bogey on the fourteenth must have surely disappointed the Indian but it was a good score nonetheless.
"Oh, it feels great. I don't even know how many I made," said Atwal, who recently changed his grip -- moving his hands higher in order to get over the golf ball better at address.
Many people have been experimenting with their grips. Earlier, Jim Furyk was witnessed making adjustments to his grip.
Former world number one, Vijay Singh also changed his grip a little and the interesting thing is that these little adjustments are working perfectly for these golfers.
The 39-year-old, Atwal must not get carried away by his performance because playing over the weekend is always tricky.
