Arjuna Ranatunga vows to substantiate Hashan Tillakaratne's fixing allegations – Cricket News
Former Sri Lankan skipper http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Arjuna-Ranatunga-c45447 has also joined the party and vowed to disclose more details in order to substantiate Hashan Tillakaratne’s match-fixing allegations.
"I am planning to hold a press conference soon and will reveal more details on this," Ranatunga said.
Ranatunga, who led http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sri-Lanka-c758 to their historic World Cup victory in 1996, came into the picture a few days after former Test captain Hashan Tillakaratne alleged that the Lankan national team has been involved in the evil of match-fixing since 1992.
Tillakaratne, who played 83 Tests and 200 ODIs for Sri Lanka, claimed, "I can tell this in agreement with my conscience. Match fixing is not something that started happening yesterday or today. According to my knowledge, it happened since 1992. I say this
with great responsibility."
Tillakaratne also claimed to have some very important proofs which he threatened to reveal in the near future. While http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Rashid-Latif-c84084 backed Tillakaratne’s allegations, a number of Lankan cricketers including Mahela Jayawardene challenged
him to provide evidences in order to prove his claims.
The allegations from former Lankan skipper evoked a controversial debate about International Cricket Council’s efforts to curb corruption in the game. A couple of days ago, the legendary Imran Khan also asked ICC to find new ways to tackle widely-spread
menace of match-fixing.
Ranatunga, who headed Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) in 2008, also said that he would take every necessary step to eliminate the evil of fixing in the national cricket.
Furthermore, a former Sri Lankan player who denied to declare his identity, supported Tillakaratne's allegations and expressed his concerns about the two matches in early 1990s. “I am suspicious about at least two matches. Sri Lankan players had no money
then,” he said.
Responding to the question that why did not he reveal the information for 20 years, the former Lankan player added, "The truth would not have come out even now had this not been revealed by Tillakaratne."
It must be noted that both Ranatunga and Tillakaratne have joined politics after saying good bye to cricket and the two former cricketers belong to the current opposition party in the country.
