Arkansas Razorbacks’ Ryan Mallett recovering from concussion
Arkansas Razorbacks’ quarterback Ryan Mallett is said to be improving after suffering a concussion in his club’s loss to the Auburn Tigers on Saturday 16 October.
Mallett was forced out of the competition against Auburn after he took a hit to the head in the first half. Mallett was replaced by back-up Tyler Wilson. However, the team was unable to recover and went on to a 65-43 defeat.
The loss of Mallett would be huge for the Razorbacks, as he is currently their top offensive player and a candidate for the Heisman Trophy. The youngster has been superb this season and is the main reason Arkansas can boast the second best passing offence
in the country, averaging 366.3 yards per game.
Moreover, the loss to Auburn was devastating for Arkansas in the Bowl Championship Series standings, as the club was dropped to 23rd after bring ranked 12th in the AP Top 25.
Arkansas should be able to sneak by with an unhealthy Mallett for the next two weeks, as they have games against the Mississippi Rebels and the Vanderbilt Commodores. Nevertheless, the club would like to have the star quarterback back on the roster in time
for their game against South Carolina on 6 November.
The Razorbacks are now entering the most important portion of their schedule, as the remainder of their games are against conference opponents. Therefore, if Mallett is forced out, the club will have to work on developing a running game, which has been inconsistent
throughout the season and now sits 96th in the nation, averaging only 113.7 yards per game.
Fortunately for Arkansas they have three games remaining against ranked sides, and if they are able to win all three, they could force their way back to the top of the BCS standings.
So far this season Mallett has thrown for 1,844 yards and 14 touchdowns.
