Arkas IZMIR defeats Iraklis THESSALONIKI by 3-1
A recent Pool A match of the CEV Volleyball Champions League- Men took place between Arkas IZMIR as well as Iraklis THESSALONIKI.
The competition between the two sides was hosted in the Turkish city of Izmir. The venue of the match was the Halkapinar sports hall. The two teams found themselves playing in front of a total of 2000 spectators.
The first set of the game saw the home team struggle with ball as they fell to making errors while the guests were able to dominate the court in the first set of the game and secure a win. The loss of the first set got the IZMIR going in the second frame
and they were able to equalise the match spurred on by the loud cheers of the home crowd. Once IZMIR won the second frame, the momentum generated from the win got the Turkish squad going in the third as well as the fourth set which got them the match at the
following final set scores: 25-27, 25-22, 25-14 and 29-27.
The coach of the losing team, Sotirios Drikos shared his views after the match in the following words, “We caught a good start tonight and put Arkas under pressure. We were also close to call for the tie-break but Arkas has many good back-up players and
they took advantage of this.”
On the other hand, the coach of Izmir, Glenn Hoag, expressed his jubilation on winning the match in the following manner, “Iraklis showed great resistance tonight and we made many mistakes at the beginning of the match. I was expecting a great game from
Iraklis and they did so. We are happy with this win as our goal remains to advance to the next round of the competition.”
The winning team was better than the guests in almost all aspects of the match but most importantly, the attack as well as the defence of IZMIR played a key role in securing them the four set win that eventually got the Turkish squad the top slot in their
pool as well. IZMIR will be looking to maintain the top position in the coming games as well.
