Arkas IZMIR sweep CSKA SOFIA in a Pool A match of 2012 CEV Volleyball Champions League
A Pool A match of the 2012 CEV Volleyball Champions League- Men saw the Arkas IZMIR contest with the CSKA SOFIA recently.
The two teams competed with each other in the Bulgarian city of Sofia while the venue of the competition was the Arena Armeets. The total number of people who came to watch the two teams clash with each other was estimated to be more than 3,000.
The match did not take long to reach its end as the Arkas was able to maintain dominance of the courts all through the match and made it a short story by making a clean sweep over their opponents. The Arkas stayed at the top of the game for the majority
of the match. The first set did not see the CSKA take control at any point in the frame. It was only in the second set that CSKA challenged the Arkas significantly but the effort was not enough to secure a win. The third set was again dominated by Arkas who
sealed the deal on the match at the following final set scores: 25-17, 25-23 and 25-19.
The head coach of the losing team, Aleksandar Popov, expressed himself in the following manner when the press conference was conducted after the closing of the match, “We played well but our opponent today was a very experienced team full of great players.
I think Arkas could be even one of the favourites in the tournament.”
The first set of the match saw both the teams come out strong against each other as the frame remained close for the initial part. The score was still tied at 10-10 with no one sure where the tables would turn but Arkas managed to go up by 16-12 and stick
with the advantage till the end of the frame at 25-17.
The loss of the first set got the CSKA to respond with force in the second set and the match remained close at 18-17 with CSKA leading.
However, Arkas was able to end it on their terms at 25-23. The momentum generated by winning the first two sets made Arkas win the third one with ease.
