Question:

Arm triangle help?

Okay, I can do the arm triangle from the mount, no problem. I can tap people TRYING to do an arm triangle from the guard, but my opponents always tell me they are tapping cause it hurts, not because I am pulling off a true arm triangle.

My problem is that when I pull my opponent down, their chin naturally rests against the arm, not above it. Chin is down so no choke.

You jujitsu masters out there, please give me a hint as to a workable way to get my opponents chin up from that position. Or maybe some way to force their arm underneath or maybe something else I'm not thinking of?

Thanks!

  1. Next time ask them not to tap because of the pain, and just wait for their shoulder to dislocate. Then, let them tell you it wasn't a real triangle. Try putting your arm around their head so that it's like a head lock then grab your sleeve by the elbow of your other arm. drive your hand like a cross face through and under the chin and hold on to the shoulder of the arm around the head and squeeze down trying to meet your elbow ( arm around the head ) and forearm ( arm under chin or next to side of neck) together. it's a pretty good choke, that will work most of the time.

  2. Are you trying to arm triangle people from your guard? Don't bother, unless you have arms like Jeff Monson. Just because you can tap noobs, it doesn't mean you're doing it correctly. Like you said, your training partners aren't tapping because you're applying the choke properly. That doesn't make you a good training partner if you're hurting your teammates.

I see whitebelts going h**l for leather when they think they've got a choke on. They don't care if they crush the guy's jaw, so long as they get the choke. It's all about ego and not about learning to master a technique.

Arm triangles should only really be attempted when you're in either side mount or full mount. That way, it's easy to trap your opponent's arm under his chin.

  3. Assuming that your right leg is the leg that is BETWEEN your opponent's head and arm when applying from the guard,  pull his right arm down and off to the side (which in this case, would be the right side) which encircles the throat when executing the hold.

Check out the below link to get the right position to ensure you don't get stacked or picked up. Should give you a better picture.
