I am 29 years old and thinking of joining the army infantry.I know this is the fastest way to get promoted and it actually does interest me but i will probally reclass latter on.My question has to do with the fact that I am married. My wife expects and understands that I am going to be deployed but when not deployed what will life be like? She is worried that she will never see me we just need to know so I can choose a mos that works for both of us. Thanks

  1. My husband is infantry.  He is gone if not every month, atleast every other month for 2 or 3 week training cycles someplace else.  He works late, comes home at 4 am just to be back to work at 9 am.  He usually gets weekends off, but not always.

In all, my hubby wouldn't want to do anything else besides infantry, so it works for him, and we make it work for us. There are pretty frequent "four day"s where you have the weekend, plus fri/mon off, and that's nice.  There are lots of 'schools' that are 1-3 months long, and usually across the nation.  he leaves for work at 5am, does PT, shower/breakfast (at work, not at home), works, sometimes breaks for lunch (maybe 30% of the time he has a 1hr or so lunch break), he's off by 3 - 5 pm.  and thats just for regular days.  about 45% of his schedule is regular days.

  2. 11B at 29 ain't gonna happen Sunshine. If you're going in the military there are a h**l of a lot more jobs that will be so much more USEFUL in civilian life than being a ground poundin' grunt. Use your head, quit being a keyboard Rambo, and pick something that won't get you killed and leave your wife to clean up your mess.

  3. Important fact #1 - 11B is a priority 1 MOS, which means you can only reclass to OTHER priority 1 MOSs... most of which you probably won't like.

Depending on which unit you're in, you may or may not receive a lot of family time. Even training for deployments can be rough on families. I promise you that you will be deploying SOMEWHERE if you enlist 11B, and that as well is time away from the family. A lot of my fellow soldiers missed some important things in their family lives... birthdays, anniversaries, baby's first words, steps, etc.

But, on the other hand, your kid will think you're the coolest dad in the world :P

  4. Unfortunately as an 11 Bravo you will probably be AWAY from home more than you are at your duty base....probably Ft. Benning or Ft. Bragg to name a few. Your also a bit OLDER than most of the recruits in Basic Training. Most 11B are not allowed to reclassify until AFTER their first enlistment. Even then it would probably only be in Combat Arms field.

Why not pick the MOS you REALLLLY want before you enlist. I loved the medical field....Combat Field Medic promotes just as fast as any other MOS and it's pretty much an 8-5 job.

    Good Luck

  5. Your going to more than likely spend long days at your unit. You will spend a lot of time in the field through out the year. But there will be off time I promise you. .

  6. I'm doing it,leaving tuesday, but I'm just turned 17.i would look for something different,i don't think infantry is right for a married man,but if its what tou really want to do then do it.they are the backbone of the ARMY.

  7. when not deployed you schedule should be like this.

    0600-0715pt

    go home shower eat

    0900-1130work

    lunch

    1300-1630work

then repeat next day,  training may dictate a different schedule and duties, but for the most part when not deployed or in thFieldld training it is just regular job.  by the way check out 13f. foreward observer,  the promotion points are acually lower.  just a sugjestion

  8. timothy's got it right, it's pretty much a 9-5 gig but you will spend around a week a month in the field training so if maximum home time is what your lookin for then I would look into a trade, 21's work 9-5 if that and frequently get 4 day weekends, you will deploy but instead of kicking in doors and running checkpoints you'll be building c-huts and filling in IED holes.  now that I think of it if maximum home time is what your looking for then join the Air Force.
