  1. Well, think hard first "is this really what you want to do" because the national guard and reserves are the first to be deployed.  I know, I live in an army family.  My hubby and daughter are in the reserves and they both have served two tours.

But, they are more like the reserves, pay isnt much until you move up in rank.  No you dont have to move, unless you want to.  Sometimes its hard to drill if you live farther away from the unit.  Moving would be up to you but be prepared to be deployed.

  2. All Army personnel receive the same training.

Th Army Reserve comes directly under the Reserve Forces of the Army. They are designed to either replace an active duty unit or back fill a position in a Army unit. The President uses the USAR as needed.

The NG comes directly under the Governor of the State they belong to. They may be called to active duty to help out with a State emergency according to the needs of the Governor (fight forest fires, help with floods, hurricanes) However, they may  be called to active duty for a period of up to one year (or longer) to serve the needs of the country. You can move around the States in either the USAR or the NG.

ALL ranks receive the same pay.  For USAR/NG a drill weekend pays 1 day of military pay for each 4 hour period of drill.  If called to active duty, it becomes 1 day (24 hours) pay for each day.

I do not know the basic pay scale but you can check out the Army website and look up the pay scales.

  3. 1. ARNG is very similar to USAR.

    2. Pay is about $2631 (yr) for E1 with less than four months of service.

    3. Speaking from USAR, you usually will not be placed in a unit more than 50 miles away.

  4. 1. National guard is more like the Reserves. There is an Active guard but that is hard to get into. You will go through basic training and AIT (avanced individual training) right along side Army Reserves and Active duty army (which I am). Then you go home. You will have Drill one weekend a month, where you will train for 2 days on whatever you came in for. During the summer you come in for 2 weeks. As far as deploying goes, National guard does deploy but there is a good amount of time between deployments unlike Active duty. I got a buddy that has been with his National guard unit for 3 years and hasn't deployed.

    2. The pay scale for the Ranks is the same. BUT I don't know how it works for National guard since its only a weekend a month.

    3. No you don't have to relocate. You live where you want and get assigned to the closest National Guard post to you. Its usually never more than 2 hours away. My buddy lives outside of Nashville and is 15 minutes away from his post.
