Question:

Army OSUT packing list.

I was wondering what I should bring to OSUT. My recruiter didn't say anything about what I should bring. I really don't have ANY money, so I doubt I'll be bringing much.

My list so far is looking like:

Socks

Deodorant stick

Underwear

Tooth brush

Razors

Mole Skin

Shaving Cream

That is about it. I don't have any plain shirts to bring, except plain black shirts with a chest pocket. I have like 15 of those shirts because I had to wear them at my previous job as a cook.

Also, will I have a chance to buy a new pair of shoes? The only pair of shoes I have is about 4 year old hand me downs, and the sole is literally being held on with super glue. Or can I just get away with constantly wearing my boots even during PT? I know wearing boots while running isn't the most fun, but you have to do what you have to do. I honestly cannot afford a new pair of shoes right now, and I have no relatives to bum money from.

  1. bring as little as possible, when you leave youll have a ton of stuff, and youll get an advancement to buy stuff when you get there.

  2. OK, here is your answer.  Bring as little as possible.  Depending on what reception station you go to, you will have a shakedown for contraband.  This is done in the wee hours of the morning.  You will wear your civilian clothes for a few hours of that day and then you will get your initial issue, haircut etc.  You will get a type of credit card with a $300 limit on it.  This WILL come out of your first paycheck.  Once you get this card you will be marched over to the shoppette and you will buy toiletries etc.  You will also be MADE to buy running shoes so bring your crappy ones and you can throw them away in the dumpster once you get your new ones.  Mole skin, don't bring it.  Realistically, you need shaving cream, toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, notice I didn't say deodorant and shampoo.  I don't let my privates have it.  Once you get done inprocessing at reception you will go to your unit and be met by some very happy drill sergeants.  After a very very very long day, you will be shook down by them and all your civilian stuff will be packed away and locked up in a room and you will get it at graduation.  Just imagine dirty clothes locked up for 3 1/2 months and what they smell like.  Bottom line:  The fewer things that you bring, the better off you are.... simple toiletries.

  3. Maybe add a couple days change of close.  MAKE SURE YOU BRING THE ROUTING INFO FROM YOUR BANK SO YOU CAN GET PAID.

    Double check with your Recruiter.

  4. OK check this out.. go see your recruiter and tell them your situation.. They will give you the list you need. If you do not have the money tell them that you need some help and alot of times they will loan you the money, give you the money.give you an advance on your check.. ETC.. the recruiter is there not only to be a salesman but its his job to be sure everything runs smooth... Gl and welcome to the Army...

  5. Did OSUT at Ft. Knox. I was told to bring one change of clothes and wear my running shoes. Bring your hygine products to.

Everything else will be issued to you and your personal belongings will be stored or sent home.

Double check with your recruiter about a list though...

  6. You will be given a sort of debit card by the Army that has about $300 on it.  This money will come out of your paycheck.  With it you will be given a short period of time within which to buy items that are required such as running shoes.  This is also how you pay for haircuts.

Do not bring 15 black t-shirts or any large amount of clothes.  You will NOT wear them.  You also will not wear boots for PT.  Don't try to be a hero and endure things like that for no reason.  The Army is about being a team and helping other Soldiers.
