Question:

Army Officer or Warrant path?

I have a choice between working towards engineer technician warrant 919A or working towards regular officer. I am in a feeder MOS for warrant and the other requirements. From what I have seen there is not much of a benefit in being a warrant over an officer. Any input?

  1. The Warrant Officer program was designed to keep experienced enlisted personnel in the military who had highly specialized technical experience, but didn't have the ambition to become an officer.  Essentially it allows them to be promoted above the normal enlisted ranks, continue to get some pay raises, etc, so they would have more incentive to stay in.

If you're ambitious, go for regular officer.

  2. Depending on what you seek in your career.  Do want to go in Enlisted or get Commissioned?  The Enlisted are rightfully the 'specialist' of their MOS, practically the workhorse that learn their MOS professionally.

Only route to being a Warrant Officers (WO) being Enlisted.  No Commissioned Officers (CO) can become a WO unless they want to resign and become Enlisted until they reach SNCO.  The WOs are the highly skilled of the servicemembers.  Generally because they are there to be the ones with the answers.  COs may have a MOS and learn about their MOS, but not so much that they can perform the same duties as their Enlisted.  They only know enough in order to lead, or take command. WOs were created because they needed someone at an Officer-level that is also a Specialist in their MOS.  A General knows that they'll get a more feasible answer than from an CO of that same MOS.  COs aren't trained nor reserved to specialize in their field as much as the SNCO.

So, the decision is yours, you want to be a 'specialized' Warrant Officer or a garrison-level Commissioned Officer?  I am submitting my Fitness Report once I am promoted to Staff Sergeant.  I even have a degree too but I have more ambition to be a Warrant Officer vice a Commission.

Marines have five ranks for Warrant Officers; Warrant Officer being the lowest.  This rank is the proven stage.  If the Marine WO is able to perform the duties as a WO, they are promoted to Chief Warrant Officer-class by ths President; a CWO2 on through CWO5.  There are also the Marine Gunner, these are the Masters-at-Arms.  They are CWOs with the 'Bursting Bomb' insignia on their left collar and CWO rank insignia on the right.  These Gunners are the supreme Infantry Weapons Officer.  They are the ones that know every weapon in the military arsenal to its minute detail, and ground/amphibious warfare strategic gurus, not many can become a Marine Gunner.

  3. Go for the Regular Officer
