Question:

Army Recruit with questions

I wanted to do something in the MI field. My recruiter told me I didn't qualify for security clearance because my bro-in-law is from Iran. He's a naturalized U.S. citizen and has lived in this country for 25yrs, and so has his immediate family. MEPS told me it wouldn't be a problem. Who is correct? Also, because of the security clearance I didn't qualify for anything requiring clearance which left me with MOS 92R, parachute rigger. I scored 85 on the ASVAB with 119 as my general score, which should've qualified me for any Army MOS right? Also, I have a CHSPE (CA H.S. Proficiency) which they are saying is a GED. I have 12 college credits so 1 more class would entitle me to enlistment bonuses that H.S. grads qualify for, but GED's don't. My recruiter said having 15 credits won't matter for me, but on army-info.com they say otherwise. I'm supposed to swear-in at MEPS tomorrow and ship out for Basic on the 13th, but I don't want to sign until I know what my better options are. Any help anyone can give me would be greatly appreciated! I definitely want to join the Army and serve my country, but as my recruiter said, "There's a lot of money out there." I don't want to be left out because I didn't do the research, but chose to trust the recruiters instead. Thank you.

  1. with that many questions, don't do it. I don't know the current regulations but you should have clear concise answers in writing before you sign up. I would suggest checking with another recruiter.

  2. Personally, I do not believe the security clearance would be a problem.  It's not an immediate family member, he's been naturalized for 25 years and he has no immediate family members outside the USA.

With your scores, and college credits, you'd be foolish to go in as a parachute rigger.  Talk to a navy recruiter.

  3. The army recruits Muslims as interpretors in Muslim countries. I see no problem with you getting a clearance, if it matters they can still train you for your MOS, you just won't be allowed to see secrat stuff. I was a printer and the people who did not have a clearance did other stuff in other PLT's.

As for your college credit, you can enter the army with a GED and college credit, the credit will probably get you a higher rank, but make sure you get it all in your ocntract.

  4. Anything your recruiter tells you does not matter.  It is at MEPS where you get everything put in writing and on paper.  Your recruiter just does the initial application and screening, but it is at MEPS where the promises are made and broken, so although you should listen to what your recruiter has to say, know that the final authority will come from the people at MEPS.

If the people at MEPS are the ones saying that it should not be a problem, then it shouldn't be, though surprises do happen.

What you can do is ask all these questions at MEPs tomorrow when you sit down and go over your paperwork before you sign that contract.  Make sure you are absolutely clear on everything you are signing and that you get everything you were promised.  They may get pushy and make it sound like you are hurting yourself by delaying, but it is your every right to see the forms and fully understand what it is you are going into.

  5. It sounds a little wrong. With that GT score of 119 you can do any job in the Army. Man go to a recruiter in another loaction and talk to them. They can pull up your ASVAB and look at your options. Yes MEPS gives you the job and the bonus. You will automatically pop up in their computer for bonus. But you need to trust your recruiter to help look out for you. If you still cannot get an answer I know a recruiter in Ca right now that you can trust. Let me know if you need help.
