Question:

Army Reserves - Signals, Medics or Sappers?

If there are any current ADF servicemen out there (particularly reservists) who can recommend a trade in the reserves for a 20 something male in sydney? Not really interested in combat units just some that is not overly taxing and able to give me further skills.

Any replies appreciated.

  1. now a days they dont pin point medics as combat or not so if your stuck on you dont want to be in a combat unit i wouldnt do that. cuz theres a chance. but it is something you can take into the civilian world my hubby is a nationally registered EMT in any state in the US

  2. The Medical Corps would be a good choice. Signals is a good trade too, though I can't think of many civilian equivalents to being a Reserve Sig.

The Ordnance Corps features Clerical and Stores jobs too - being employed as a Q-Storeman in a combat unit is a decent posting.

The Royal Australian Engineers could teach you some useful skills, though whether you join the construction or combat squadrons you'll be doing lots of physical work.

You could also look into the ARTAP Traineeship and Apprenticeship Program - it's a system in which you do an apprenticeship or traineeship with a civilian organization, all sponsored by the Defence Force, while doing reserve service. When you're finished, you'll be qualified in a particular Army Reserve Trade job.
