If a prior-serviceman signed a 6-year contract with the Army Reserves, got a new MOS (because his, 13P, doesn't exist anymore) and a decent bonus, would he be able to switch to Active Duty within months of joining the Reserves, maybe within 6 months of finishing AIT??? And would he be able to get the duty station of choice, since he won't have to go to AIT again? (He has a fiance and daughter in Germany.) And would he have to pay back his bonus in any way???

  1. my expereicne was different I was going to go active duty six months later but went active duty six years later, my first actove duty station was panama and they were tryign to get me to get a new MOS, well that meant I would have to go back to AIT, I said I would just stay a printer and just go directly to a duty station (Panama) because to get a new MOS and then a duty station would mean more time away from my kids. I doubt he would have to pay back his bonus, but talk to a recrutor, maybe his MOS is under another name, my MOS went from 83 Lima to 81 Lima.

  2. You can request a transfer to RA. When I was in the National Guard they wouldn't let me go to the Active Duty Army...but I could switch to Navy. (I did and I had to take boot camp over and go to A school)

I had to pay back the bonus.

If there is a way to go into the Army and by-pass the reserves do that. If Active Duty is what you want...

It seems like a back-assward way of doing things. Some of it can be done, but not the way you described it.

  3. It depends and is up to his commander. If they are about to deploy and then he goes on stop loss, they will not release him until he finnishes the deployment, but if not it should not be an issue.

Yes the reserves is different contract and he would have to pay back the bonus, but would most likely qualify for a bonus for the active duty contract.
