How hard is the training for the green berets? Is it worse than the SEALs or the pararescuemen? How long do they stay overseas?

  1. Since I have never undergone SEAL training I couldn't tell you. Special Forces schools and qualifications take a couple of years at least to complete, and then there is the Q.

Designed specifically to break the individuals will and make him want to quit. It is one of those rare schools that you can get kicked back to your old unit and it actually be someone elses fault.

I forgot largely about the pain, anguish and torment of basic, AIT, Airborne and Ranger School. The Q course is as fresh today as it was 15 years ago. I wouldn't trade it for anything on earth...except for my wife...I think.

  2. One can't compare the training pipelines of different SOF groups. Each have different functions they are preparing their operators for.

You can count on any SOF program being challenging and pushing you to your limits. That's the point of them. They first see if you have what it takes to apply yourself into the career after that, they train you to ensure you will be able to function on a team in the job you've been given. It doesn't really get easier .. it just becomes different the further you advance in the pipelines.

Try googling SFAS and SFQC, you'll find a breakdown of how the SF pipeline works.

As for how long they stay overseas, depends on the assignment. 6 months is the goal for combat deployments, but it's not always possible. With our current engagements, OPTEMPO is heavy for everyone in SOF since we are a small community in comparision to our regular forces.

I will tell you this, you can expect to be away from home a lot whether on deployment, TDY or you're simply out training.
