  1. Cold my friend.

I mean it is so cold units from alaska go to fort drum to do cold weather training. but Syarcus is kinda close by so you could go to some college parties

  2. You can expect that you or the guy you're with will deploy and probably pretty soon.  Oh yeah, it might be a tad chilly also.

Yes, it does get cold (not 18 ft. of snow) but if you don't already know how, learn how to cross-country ski or downhill ski.  Like any place we Army families move to - make the most of your experience.  I'd also suggest you get a tour guide book of NY such as a AAA book.  During the autumn go to Mexico, NY for apple picking.  There is lots to do and see, you just have to go get it instead of waiting for it to come to you.  It's a pretty rural area, certainly not a hustle-and-bustle city.  Good Luck and enjoy the experience!

OK. . .maybe 18 ft. of snow throughout the winter - not at one time.  ;-)

  4. the biggest thing is that it is cold up here most of the year..and we get a lot of snow. in the summer it is really pretty and the river is only a half hour away. expect to do some driving if you want to do anything. i can't really compare it to any other base because this is the only one i have ever been at.

  5. Hehe I grew up around there. I hope you like blizzards and snow storms. Very cold winters, 18 feet of snow a year, and super humid summers.

  6. you an army wife? i am at fort lewis, good luck have you taken AFTB classes yet? that means army family team building, if not you should look into it

  7. Drum is a "unique" post to say the least, they are ALWAYS deploying, my hubby had just returned home in November 2007 after doing a 15 month deployment and his unit already had deployment orders to go back this winter when we left in May...Drum wasnt our favorite post we ever been to and my husband has been in the Army 15 years...The housing list is very long...Watertown is not military friendly the majority of them cant stand us, just take a look at craigslist rants and rave one day and you will see what im talking about, the winters are long, the summers are short, there is no hospital on post and no elementary schools on post. There is new housing, a new bigger px and they are expanding the commissary. Outside of post is finally starting to build up. It gets very very very cold in the winter sometimes 35 below zero, and snows all the time. It can start snowing in Oct and not stop ubtil May. Syracuse is an hour south and it has a nice zoo and mall, waterloo outlet is about 2 hours away, vermont is 3 and half hours away. Make sure you go to the Adirondack Mountains in the fall, new york has the most beautiful fall season i have ever seen, also go in the winter it is very beautiful. Go to Alexandria Bay and take a cruise of the thousand islands, go to sackets harbor, they have a great comedy club every weekend...also go to burrville cider mill, they have the best apple cider donuts, then go to clayton and get some river rat cheese curd, mmm its so good. If you drive a bit away from post it is beautiful, but drum its self sucks,. Here are a few pics that i took while we were there, i have a ton more...if you want to see more or have any questions feel free to email me at fort_sill_army_wife@yahoo.com
