Question:

Army bases in Australia?

I have heard they can give people an option of which base to work at. I said to the recruiter I really didn't care. And he replied maybe have a think as you don't want to be sent to somewhere you don't want to go.

Can people explain some of the pros or cons of the main army basses in Australia.

  1. I agree with RAAF Mum, Also it depends on what type of trade your doing too, i quick run down Rifleman is Townsville, Brissy, Holsworthy, Darwin. Engineers are much the same but logistics and so on is Victoria, and QLD.

I am in the RAE at the moment i used to be in the navy i have been posted a couple of places i much prefer QLD though very nice.

  2. i certainly wouldn't want to be living in a tent in the middle of the outback hundreds of miles from civilization.

  3. My son is in the RAAF, and when we have discussed the same question he advised that at some point you will be sent on a remote placement in the military, that's just part of the lifestyle and the expectation of your enlistment.

He has planned his requests around a five year plan.  He is married and so having children and being close to his family have played a part in his planning.

He did not get his first request for bases after basic training because the base he requested didn't offer the employment training that he had been accepted into.

What I am trying to indicate here is that your choices in lifestyle, family and planning have to fit in with your employment requirements too.

Bases closer to any city offer more conveniences if you live off base, but you get paid a remote allowance if you get sent to a remote base.

Also, expect to get deployed overseas at some point too.

    Good luck and have fun.
