Army boyfriend requests AR - 15?

Question

Ok I'm going to try to make you all understand where I am coming from..cause I'm trying to understand him but how can I am me and I haven't been through what he has and...well. So, he is just about ready to ship home from his second 15 month tour in Iraq. He is actually supposed to leave for Kuwait in like....4 days and he tells me that he wants me to buy him an AR-15 that looks like an M-16. I am an xray tech..I've never BEEN in the military..he's all upset cause he has to give his weapon back and he's named her and he wants one for home to make him feel safe..and I'm TRYING to understand..and I'm NOT judging him or anything...but...where do I find one?? Do I just call the local gun shops and am I like hey..I know absolutely NOTHING about guns...but my boyfriend wants this AR-15 thing. He said that it shouldn't cost that much and shouldn't be THAT hard to find...but every where I've looked on the interenet they are like a grand which...if it puts his mind at ease it's well worth it but.....any more suggestions on how I (the girl who knows absoultely NOTHING about guns) can find what I'm looking for. I've been on like a hundred websites and the people on there are speaking in like....a foreign language..haha. I would appreicate ANY help you can offer!!

ARs are good wpns and looks and functions like the m-16. They are made from different companies like Bushmaster, Stag Arms, Colt, etc. The down side is that they are more expensive than the average semi auto rifle like around $750+. They come in different calibers now a days and one of the cool aspects of the ar is that if you want to shoot a different caliber say a .308 you get a upper receiver that chambers the .308, attach to the lower receiver and fire away. Try to check local gun shops first then buy online if one is not available. If you buy online, you're going to have to have the dealer ship the ar-15 to a license dealer (most gun shops will do this) and pay transfer fees the dealer charges.

Call up a local gun shop about where to get an AR-15. Some states *such as California* have a lot of restrictions as to what kind of AR-15 you can have.

Also depending on some states, you have to be over a certain age to buy that kind of weapon. Another legal issue is that if YOU buy it then it is legally YOUR AR-15. Since most state do require a background check for these things. So if you break up with him, it belongs to you.

I would have him wait until he can buy it when he gets back.

Yes just go to the local gun shop and tell them you want a AR 15. There will be different brands to chose from, but they should answer all you questions.

Okay, I was in the Marine Corps and I did deploy to Iraq.  I'm here to tell you that his strange obsession with his rifle is VERY odd.  I don't believe that buying someone in his mental state a weapon is a great idea.  I'm pretty concerned about him carrying one for the remainder of his deployment.  He needs to seek counseling.

after my first iraq deployment i never wanted to see an AR-15/M-16 again, i did buy a handgun when i got back though...

an AR-15 can be purchased at a gun store for $600-$2000, you can get a high quality AR for $1000-$1200

I would recommend calling the local gun shops. Not Wal-Mart or Academy or anything, but REAL gun shops and asking them if they have any in stock. I am not much up on gun law, but I believe there is a waiting period to get it. Also, you would definitely want to enroll in a gun safety class. Also, get a safe. Or, when not in use, remove the bolt.

Go to a good book or magazine store and buy the most current copy of the 'Shotguns News' in which you will find ads for all the AR15 and AR15 style rifles currently available for sale in the United State.  Prices vary from $379.00 - $1,300.00 depending on the make and features included with the rifle.  Check with your State and local gun laws as some communities in the United States prohibit the private ownership of assault rifles.  If it is legal to owe where you live and you find him one that he will like, go to your local firearms dealer and see if they have it in stock.  If not you can ask them to order it (at a fee) at which point they will try to sell a more expensive version of the rifle so it might help you out to have a mature male family members or friend with you.

My advise is to hold off on the weapon purchase. You do not know what is going through his head and it seems to me that he is in need of some therapy. As having been in the military myself the transition to civilian life can be difficult. There are a lot of  mental conditioning areas that he needs to have decommissioned. He will need your support but you have to be smart in the way you support him. Buying him a weapon that's sole purpose is to kill is probably not the smartest thing right now.

I would suggest to him that he pick out his new gun himself - to make it really special.  You wouldn't want to be in a position to choose his replacement "baby".  Suggest that you make it an outing to go find the "right" gun when he gets home.

Maybe he'll even have changed his mind by then.
