  1. There is no rank higher than Sergeant Major.

Okay, Okay, I gues that some of those officers may THINK they outrank the Sergeant Major, but it's really just in their heads.

Seriously, though, once you've made Sergeant Major, it would be unusual to switch over to the Warrant Officer or Commissioned Officer ranks.  It is more common around Staff Sergeant or Sergeant First Class.  I don't know how long the average time to make SGM is, but I imagine its around 20 years.

  2. a sergeant major is an a*****e who tries to ruin your personal life and army career...jk...well actually thats kinda true in my experiences...lol....these guys already summed up your answers

  3. Sergeant Major is a senior enlisted NCO and takes more than 10 years to attain that rank. The higher rank would be Command Sergeant Major.

Sergeant Major is the highest enlisted rank in the paygrade of E-9. It takes roughly 18-20 years or so to get that rank. SInce all officers out rank all enlisted this is the higest rank you can get as an enlisted person he cannot go higher in rank only higher in position. Seargent Majors generally work at any headquarters on various levels. Battalion all the way up to Army HQ. I am a warrant officer I outrank all enlisted people but no other officer. I technically out rank the Sergant Major of the Army who is the highest enlisted person in the Army, However he works at the pentagon in the highest POSITION and if I told him what to do, he would tell me where to stick it.

  5. Here's a complete list of Army Ranks:

  6. It will take more than 18 years if it even happens at all. Promotions at that level aren't automatic and they have to be earned.

There are 2 higher ranks but both are still the same pay grade of E-9.
