  1. i have been a 19K for almost 5 years, and have never been on a tank except in OSUT (basic training and AIT at the same time).  I am however on the MGS Stryker, which is pretty BA.  if you get sent to a stryker unit, be ready to be hated by the infantry, but once you make buddies, its an awesome unit to be a part of, what the guys in my platoon tell me about being in armor units is that you are either in the field or you are in the motor pool doing maintenance on the tank.  all in all though, tankers are the coolest guys to be around...no offense to the infantry guys out there, you are cool too, but i prefer my own "kind" lol

  2. AS a 19k in peacetime you would follow the normal routine.  Armor units, in peacetime, generally follow an 18 month "training cycle".

You will start the cycle with individual qualification training and a small, short, local, field exercise.  This will be repeated in every subsequent cycle.

You will then proceed to small unit training, including ranges for your tank and tank platoon.  Including a small, short, local field exercise.  Company-level training, as it were.

Then to battalion-level training at the local training area.  More company level training, but with a battalion focus.

Then to brigade-level training at National Training Center, Fort Irwin, CA (or CMTC Hohenfelds, FRG).  Your division and brigade will own the training area for 3 months or so.  Your battalion will about 3 weeks of that to exercise itself against the OPFOR and lose.  (everybody loses eventually, if you don't lose, they keep training you until you lose).

That is the general schedule that you will find yourself in.  If you are in a high-priority unit, expect that schedule to be 'accelerated' down to 12 months.  If you are not in a high-priority unit, you might stretch that out over two years.

BTW, the war changes all of this, so your schedule might be abbreviated or non-existent.  But thanks for serving and good luck.

When your not in the field you are training on simulators and maintaining your tank.

  4. Keep in mind that when these guys say you will spend a lot of time in the motor pool, that means washing, scrubing and cleaning the tank in addition to repairing any problems.

I was USMC aviation, trying to get into Army EOD, so I don't know how it is and I hope for you that the army isn't as anal as the corps.

  5. hey there! i am a 19k too! hence the name, i was stationed at ft. hood for a little while, we were in the field constantly, when we were not there we were in the motorpool.  dont worry though, the gut trucks come through there so you can get something decent to eat without quiting work!  tanks rock, strykers rock, just hope you don't get sent to a humvee!  i wouldn't get caught dead in one of those death traps...or maybe i would!

  6. lol...when you are not in the field......which can occur frequently since it is combat arms you spend a lot of time in the motor pool......I know my hubby complained about it all the time before he deployed.
