Army of Two: 40th Day – Killing time until Christmas – Part 1
It is that time of the year where gamers are made to wait for the ‘big’ titles which are due out this holiday season. Fans who want to play the likes of Naught Dog’s Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception or Activision’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 will have
to wait until November, with no triple A title releasing in the meantime.
So, we here at Bettor.com decided to ease the agonising wait by going through our extensive video game library and getting together a list of games, which have already been released and the reader may not have played it.
There will be no Killzone 3 or Battlefield Bad Company 2 recommendations, or anything of the like mentioned, but rather we will focus on the smaller titles. In fact, everyone has played their respective consoles major titles, but not everyone has played
these gems.
We start things off with a game that was not picked up by a majority of the gaming public. The reason was not that it was a bad game, but rather because it laid emphasis on co-operative gameplay, something not many gamers find attractive on its own.
Army of Two: 40th Day
Yes, you may have heard of this game and read all the reviews about Electronic Arts second venture in the Army of Two universe, but how many actually played the game?
Yes, the controls may not be as smooth as one would have liked, with the majority of those who did play the game, terming the control and movement in Army of Two ‘chunky’. The game is fairly out-dated seeing how it was released in January, 2010, and yes,
the game received an average of around 70 percent and if one has the time to go ahead and average all the scores, the rating does not do the game justice.
The game is meant to be played by two players, be it in split screen mode or online. Even the multiplayer is co-op, where the player and a buddy team up against other ‘pairs’ of players.
From a campaign standpoint, there is not much depth to the story (to be fair, there was not much in the way of a story in the first game either) but the enjoyment comes from working together to complete the missions.
There are not many co-op based games on the market with Conflict Denied Ops the only other core co-op game that pops to mind. Killzone 3 has a strong co-op single player campaign, but players can feel that it is more of an add-on rather than a full blown
cooperative IP.
40th Day relies heavily on teamwork and seeing how critics usually review games on their own, this may have been a major reason for the average scores.
However, having said that, Army of Two: The 40th Day is not a perfect game by any measure and it does have its drawbacks.
If players want to try something new and different before the holiday season where the games which require heavy commitment come out (Battlefield 3 and Modern Warfare 3 etc), then Army of Two is for you.
Just make sure you have a friend or someone at least half human playing with you.
