  1. REME RE and RS are all seperate entities, and there is no 'best'

but outside you will get more 'respect' when you look in civvy street as a REME

  2. I served my country in the Royal Signals for 34 years and often came into contact with just about every cCorps and regiment there is. I would suggest that if you are really interested in joining the army them committ yourself to the recruit office to place you where you will do best. good luck and well done

  3. The Royal Signals are concerned with Communications. They are their own regiment although they do work closely with the Royal Engineers and Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers. Their cap badge depicts Mercury, messenger of the gods, although it is sometimes nicknamed 'Jimmy'.

You are right, the Royal Signals do train soldiers up to be electricians although perhaps the REME might be a better choice if this is what you want to do. The Signals concentrate more on operating radios and computers, and, of course, motorcycle dispatch riders (google the 'White Helmets display team').

    Great career choice!

  4. I'm slightly out of touch, but, no, the Royal Signals are specialist in all the different forms of communication.  They are not part of the Royal Engineers (bridge builders etc).  Both regiments are highly regarded and certainly worth joining.  The electricians are REME (Royal Electrical Mechanical Engineers).  Again, highly regarded.

  5. An ED (electrician) in the royal signals supply power to everything that the Royal Signals use. Im in the royal signals at the moment and basicly, when i go away on exercises the ED's take a power supply from the generator, supply 230v for sockets ect. and 110v for lighting. once that has been done their job is done.

At the moment im still training, originally i wanted to join the infantrybut because i have qualifications in eletrical installation i thought i would join the signals as an ED but ive been told by another ED that ED's are a dieing trade, the way generators, lighting and power supplys can be set up is so simple anyone can do it and if anyone can do it ED's are no longer needed.

so now i know its pretty hard to be an ED when they are not needed im going to my original choice and joining the infantry.

    hope this helps.
