Arnaud Clement defeats Ryan Harrison 6-4, 6-1
World number 169 Arnaud Clement of France cruised past world number 101 Ryan Harrison of USA in straight sets 6-4, 6-1 in the opening round at the Campbell’s Hall of Fame Tennis Championships in Newport on Tuesday. The French took
just an hour and fourteen minutes to undo his opponent in a one-sided contest.
Clement needed a single break of serve in the first set to grab it 6-4. The French hit 56 percent of the first deliveries and sealed 72 percent of the points on them. The 33-year-old managed to convert 35 percent of the first returns
into points in the first set. Clement capitalised on one of the six break point opportunities he created on Harrison’s serve in the opening set.
The Frenchman thrashed Harrison in the second set as he allowed the American to clinch only a single game, breaking him twice and capturing the set 6-1. Clement returned brilliantly, grabbing a whopping 43 percent of the first
return points in the second set. The right-handed clinched both break points he received on the American’s serve in the second set.
Clement is slated to play top seed John Isner of USA in the second round.
Michael Yani beats Dudi Sela 7-6(5), 6-3
American Michael Yani, ranked 361st in the world, prevailed over world number 82 Dudi Sela of Israel in straight sets 7-6(5), 6-3 to reach the second round. The match lasted for an hour and 36 minutes.
Sela drew the first blood as he broke Yani in the third game of the opening set and held his next service game to take a 3-1 lead. The American broke back in the eighth game and tied the score at 4-4. The set was taken to a tie-break
and Yani claimed a single mini-break to grab it 7-5. The 30-year-old hit 55 percent of the first serves and two aces in the opening set. The right-handed capitalised on one of the four break points opportunities he created on Sela’s serve and saved two of
the three break points on his own serve in the first set.
In the second set, Yani broke the Israeli in the ninth game to claim the set 6-3. The American bagged 69 percent of the first service and 57 percent of the second service points in the second set.
