Arnod Vongvanig set to make a good run in the Malaysian Open - Golf News
Thailand’s Arnod Vongvanig is hopeful to make a charge in the remaining rounds after carding three-over par 75 on the opening day of the Maybank Malaysian Open on Thursday, April 12, 2012.
Vongvanig said that he is among the shortest players in the field. However, it does not matter to him as it never affects his game of golf.
"I'm 1.65m tall," said Arnond, who earned a place in the European Tour event through an outstanding start to his rookie season on the Asian Tour.
He continued by saying that the players on the European Tour are much bigger than him. Yet, the game of golf is not about physical attributes. In fact, the game is all about the technique and mental strength that a player has.
Apart from that, he expressed his pleasure on being a part of the elite field that includes Martin Kaymer, Charl Schwartzel, Louis Oosthuizen and many other big names of golf.
“I'm happy to get this opportunity especially as a rookie,” he said. “To get here without a win, it's a good accomplishment in itself. I played quite well at the beginning of the year but slipped out a bit with the putting in the last few events. Other than
that I still feel I'm playing well”.
Moreover, he holds a degree in finance from the University of Florida. Therefore, he is good at numbers and he knows very well about what numbers he needs to put on the leaderboard in the upcoming rounds.
He also admitted that he is a bit confused because of being a part of a huge tournament for the first time in his career.
Yet, he also has the idea of what he can achieve if he holds on to his nerves during the tournament.
"A good week here, a top 10, will guarantee a card for next year. My goal right now is to not think about it, just go out to play good golf. If I think about it, it won't help me play better. The more I have in my mind, the worse it is for me. I just want
to go out and make birdies," said Arnond.
He is currently 11 strokes behind the lead set by Schwartzel at eight-under par 64.
