Arnond Vongvanij eyes another victory at the Thailand Golf Championship
Arnond Vongvanij, who won last week’s King’s Cup, is confident to keep the winning momentum going into this week’s Thailand Golf Championship, in a bid to end his 2012 campaign on a high note.
He will play alongside the reigning Masters champion Bubba Watson and Japanese star Ryo Ishikawa, in the opening two rounds, at Amata Spring Country Club.
Last year, the Thai youngster decided to turn professional, after enjoying a successful amateur career.
He won the 2005 St. Augustine Amateur Classic, 2006 Terra Cotta Invitational, and the 2009 Eastern Amateur before turning professional.
Earlier this year, he participated in the Asian Tour Qualifying School, and finished tied for the second position, to secure his Asian Tour card for the 2012 golf season.
Last week, he entered the final round of the King’s Cup, sharing the fourth position on the leaderboard.
He then made a strong charge on the leaderboard, after firing an eight-under par 64, in the final round.
At the end of the week, he found himself winning the tournament with a two-stroke margin over Asian Tour legends, Thaworn Wiratchant and Mardan Mamat.
He is now confident to maintain consistency in his game, in order to contend strongly against some of the best players in the world, who have committed to play at the Amata Spring Country Club.
“The win boosted the confidence a bit and letting me know that I can do it. I was on the big stage with Mardan (Mamat) and Thaworn (Wiratchant) being there. This week is completely new for me …. my first big tournament with a lot of Major winners. I’m really
excited to seeing how I hold up against them and see what I need to improve,” he said.
He also said that the home-course advantage will also benefit the local players. Therefore, he certainly has the chance of recording another win during his rookie season on the Asian Tour.
“The Thais know the course here quite well. We should have a bit of advantage, having home ground. We’re used to hot weather which will benefit us a bit,” he said.
