Arnond Vongvanij to play the Maybank Malaysian Open, confident to lead
Arnond Vongvanij has high plans for the upcoming tournament of the Maybank Malaysian Open, as he is hoping to extend his activities on the Asian Tour.
The 23-year-old Thai professional golf player is in the field of the European Tour and Asian Tour's co-sanctioned event.
He is giving his debut year performance on the Asian Tour. He has played tremendously since January, and after making impressive finishes, he got selected for the Maybank Malaysian Open.
"I'm happy to get this opportunity especially as a rookie. To get here without a win, it's a good accomplishment in itself. I played quite well at the beginning of the year but slipped out a bit with the putting in the last few events. Other than that I
still feel I'm playing well," Vongvanij said.
Vongvanij turned professional in 2011. He earned the tour card in last year’s first stage, after impressing the Asian Tour officials. He has played seven events up till now.
He started his professional career from ISPS Handa Singapore Classic and finished tied for the 42nd position. Then he moved to the Panasonic Open India and finished on the 44th.
After practising for two consecutive weeks, he returned to golf and displayed a better performance at the Handa Faldo Cambodian Classic, securing T27 position there.
However, he faced difficulties while scoring and missed the cut at The Open Championship International Final Qualifying – Asia and SAIL-SBI Open.
Missing the cut sometimes helps and motivates the golfers to improve their scoring. Hence, he improved his swing, putting, driving distance, accuracy and played well at the ICTSI Philippine Open.
He secured the 8th position on the leaderboard at the end of the day and competed well for the title.
Then he continued his leading performance and recorded his best finish of the year of T4, at the Zaykabar Myanmar Open Presented by Air Bagan.
Vongvanij is now hoping to deliver his best and finish on the top. He also desires to compete well against the other field players.
"So getting here into a co-sanctioned event with the European Tour, the guys are so much bigger than I am. But it doesn't really matter as in golf, the physical aspect doesn't mean anything. You may have a 350m drive or a three inch putt and they are all
the same to golfers," Vongvanij said.
He is left with ample opportunities to make the first professional year more impressive and bright. If he does well at MayBank Malaysian Open, then there will also be a chance for him to start a career at the European Tour.
