Around What Age Did You Teach Your Toddler To Color?

I'm interested in hearing your stories! How did it work out? Any digested crayons? Did the big fat crayons with the plastic bases exist when your baby was growing up?

  1. Well, my daughter's used crayons or markers to color and "sign" birthday and xmas cards, and she's 20 months. However, she has the typical short toddler attentions span, so she'll draw a few lines then try and eat the crayon, or draw on the walls and her shirt with the markers(highlighters are great, they wash right out, lol). The big crayon bases by crayola are c**p, the first time they were dropped an inch to the table the crayons popped right out and wouldn't stay in afterward, even tried gluing them. Definitely not worth the 8 bucks, the sets of 8 crayons for a dollar, they are big but not as big as the ones we used to have when we were little, but they work just as well and aren't as costly. But we only occasionally let her color because right now she's more interested in doing everything all at once with the crayons in her hand and ruining stuff if she gets the chance. Haha, we tried a cheap version of the color wonder markers, I found a little activity pad at the dollar general for 2 dollars, she licked the marker, then tried to scrub the taste off her tongue with a pair of flannel pants, lol. But she hasn't stuck a marker in her mouth since then :D As winter comes, if I can find her a little table, then I will let her color some more once she understands that she has to sit at the table if she wants to have the crayons out.

    Good luck!

  2. With our two girls we started around 13 months. With our son, who is 15 months old, still hasn't showed any interest in coloring when his older sisters color. We will start very soon though trying to get him into it!

  3. my daughter (now 18 months) has been coloring since she was 12 months old. We tried those "Tadoodles" (the big plastic animal things).. they are a waste of money and time.

She uses regular crayons most of the time, but we also have the triangle fat crayons that are easier for them to hold. I want her to learn to use the regular ones because why bother with the others if she can use the little ones?

As with anything I supervise my daughter so she hasn't eaten any yet... I think she got a bite out of one once while we were at dinner and in the middle of ordering our meal.

  4. If she wants to color then let her.  But supervised since she may want to discover the crayon in her mouth!  Coloring helps build those muscles in her hands that she will later use to write with.  Any manipulation exercises help: pulling a cotton ball from a small mouthed jug, etc.  Enjoy the art!

  5. No eaten crayons or problems here. As toddlers though they don't really color, they scribble.  My son has been doing this since he was a year old. The "Tadoodles" crayons (the ones with plastic bases) have only come out within the last couple years. My son has a set but to be honest, they are hard for them to hold and use. He prefers the triangle shaped larger crayons that Crayola makes instead. He does better with those.

  6. Well my one year old is learning to color now and we have had some eaten pieces but u dont leave them u just stay there and help them and my 2 year old is learining how to hold writing utensils so that will help him color and he is doing well

  7. My son started coloring at about a year old while at daycare. Once he took a big bite out of a crayon and he actually didn't digest it at all. I saw it in the diaper the next day. I think the earlier you can get them introduced to colors the better. My son is going to be two next month and he already can pick out and show you the colors blue and red and tell you what they are.

At one point, though, he did color the kitchen door red (when it was painted white) while my husband was in the bathroom and I had my back to him washing dishes! You have to supervise them VERY closely or else you might wind up with a red/white door too. :)

  8. I gave my daughter crayons from about 10 months on, supervised by myself.  She's now 22 months old and I don't mind unsupervised.  She doesn't really draw on anything except paper and colouring books.  She's a good girl and likes to draw with her left hand since 10 months.  She can draw a stick with a continuous circle about 5 times and then dots the circle about 300 times for 'eyes'.  She can draw a heart and a letter M, O and a C.  She LOVES to colour and paint and is very creative.

  9. I taught a 1 1/2 year old to color, there where some interesting things that happened, colored his diaper, put the crayons in diaper. He uses big fat crayons.

  10. We taught my sister how to color when she was one.

She is 2 now and she can draw the head, eyes, nose, mouth, hair, and the hands and feet coming out of the head!

She tried eating crayons once, but hated it, never did it again. But she is a good girl, and she understands the meaning of no!
