  1. Your question is not so easy to answer.

If you go to the places where rich Brazilians and tourists go, you will spend a lot of money. If you go to the places where most of the Brazilian people go, and specially if you keep away from the touristy areas, than the trip can be cheap.

US$ 1000 for a week is not bad. It´s about what I would spend, very typical Brazilian middle-class standards.

If you want the best restaurants, hotels and services, you should bring much more. About US$ 1000/day.

I know it can sound absurd, but the difference is as big as the gap between wealthy and poor people in Brazil.

  2. If heading for Rio:  Hotel US$ 70 plus/night.  Try an apartment which is cheaper. I use Vanna at "vannarioflats.com.br".  Apartment in Copacabana about US$50/night.  Food is affordable if you go to the places where you pay by the kilo.  They are all over the place.  Transportation depends on how far you are going.  Bargain with the taxis or better yet use the meter.  Buses are cheap (US$ 1 each way) if you can figure out how to get around.  With the US$ exchanging at about 1.65 real/1 US$ it's quite expensive but worth the trip.
