Around what time period did computer chips begin to be used in production automobiles?

Question

What I'd really like to know is how much computer chips matter in the operation of a car. Decades would help, for example how significantly were they used in the:

1930's?

1940's?

50's?

60's?

70's?

and onwards of course...

the first cars were in 1980 1/2 to use the ECM.......

They started to used with fuel injection and electronic ignition system (mid 80's).  But with ODB2 requirement (1996), all cars engines became computer controlled at that time.
