  2. I think that humans probably began naming themselves as soon as we developed the cognitive capacities to (1) construct categories and (2) to develop and use language. Humans or human ancestors probably were able to at least develop categories of "self" and "other" even before language ability developed. So maybe the ideas/mental constructs were there even before they could actually be "named".
