Question:

Arrgh...bad play on quads?

K, I asked earlier about what to do with the nuts, and I tried it, but it didn't work. Here's how it went down:

Blinds 100/200

Me: 7 7, Sb.

4 limpers plus me.

Flop comes down:

A 7 9 rainbow.

Checks to the button, he bets 400. I call, everybody else folds. My table image at this point seems to be pretty scary. I've shown down AK, QQ twice, and knocked several people out.

Turn: Q, puts two spades on the board.

I bet 800, button calls.

River: 7, giving me quads.

This time, I bet 600. He instantly folds.

What was my mistake here? How could I have made more money on this hand?

(Remember, I didn't know I had quads until the river, so I couldn't put him all in on the turn.)

  1. the way this hand was played, it's quite possible that the only way you could possibly have made more money was to check the river and have your opponent bluff, because it looks an awful lot like he bluffed the flop when it was checked to him, picked up a flush draw on the turn and called the bet, then folded when he missed

really, the best way to play this hand on the river depends on what you thought he had on the turn...if you felt like he had a draw, then the best play really would be to check, although it's a very dangerous maneuver...in general, though, your bet is too small, it smells of having a big hand and wanting desperately to get called...you will make more money in the long run by betting about half the pot, you won't get called as often but you will make more money when you do get called

  2. He probably had 10-J Spades.   The bet on the flop was a semibluff.  He missed the river big time.  No bet would've been called on the river.   He called the turn because he had13 outs (spades any 8 or K) Assuming he had any skill.  He didn't know it but had he caught it he'd would've been dead.

  3. you might of wanted to check the river but honestly i think u got all the money u could from the pot

  4. you shouldve checked on the river, he probably would have tried to steal the pot.

  5. Your opponent was likely on a draw, perhaps with a pair of 9's as well.  Your only real shot at gaining more chips was to check the river and see if you could induce your opponent to bluff at the pot.

  6. the only way to get more money would have been checking. If he was acting before you though, not much else you could have done. But hey, still a decent pot :) Hope u cashed.
