Please advise the most inexpensive option keeping in mind we only have 4.5 hrs between landing and take-off. Is the 'tube' a viable option?

  1. As the wife of a Black Cab Driver, I've got to say "take a taxi"

  2. You could use the tube, but it isn't a quick option. It takes a good 45 minutes to get from Heathrow to Central London. If nonetheless, you choose to travel by tube, get the Piccadilly line (Dark Blue) to Green Park station, and then catch the Victoria Line (Light Blue) to Victoria Station. From Victoria, catch a Gatwick Express Train, which will have you at Gatwick Airport in about half an hour. There are no underground services to Gatwick. There may also be a coach service that connects the two airports, but I'm not too sure.

  3. BA's site tells you to catch a bus which takes a minimum of 3 hours. I say that's garbage. I think TFL's (Transport for London) website is far more realistic - between one and a half and two hours in total. Personally I would catch the Tube from Heathrow to Victoria (there are numerous changeover points possible but I'd change at Hammersmith from the Piccadilly to the District Line - it's an easy walk compared to some!), switch to the Victoria mainline station and then catch the Gatwick Express train, which is reasonably frequent and fast. The total would be no more expensive than any journey on public transport in London (i.e. it's still exorbitant but as good as it gets!)

The second link below is to TFL's main page. On the right you will see "journey planner". Type in Heathrow and Gatwick and you'll see the options.

I wouldn't try to go all the way by road, even if you could afford a taxi. You will hit the rush hour going round London which can be h**l on earth, and you could get seriously stuck. The Tube and train might be crowded but at least they don't have to wait in long traffic jams or at lights!

  4. National Express run over 100 coaches a day between Heathrow and Gatwick airports - journey time is around 1 hour 15 minutes to 1 hour 45 minutes depending on exact time of transfer  -  price is around £40 per adult..

for full details of times and ticket costs (pre booking is highly recommended) go to :-

The tube is an option and may be cheaper but involves a number of changes - there is no tube to Gatwick so the final part of your journey would involve using the Gatwick Express (an overground train) - if you have children or large suitcases with you you may find the changes to much hassle.
