I arrived in Australia as a permanent resident on May this year and i still haven't found any job yet until the end of June. I intend to live in Australia permanently. Does that count me as an Australian resident for tax purposes for the taxation year July 1, 2007 - June 30, 2008?

  1. From what you say, it sounds like you'd be regarded under common law as an Australian resident for tax purposes since you arrived here. Intention of a permanent place of abode could be the key, regardless of job security. When you do your tax return for the 2009 tax year with a tax accountant you should talk about these prior individual circumstances with them, unless you have reason to speak with an accountant now in respect of the 2008 tax year (e.g., about how foreign income is assessed for Aus. tax residents)

  2. If you are a legal australian resident, you are an australian resident for tax purposes. I think that "resident for tax purposes' applies to ppl like NZers who are not permanent residents but for tax purposes they are. Regardless of wether you were or not you have to fill out a tax return if you worked in australia before end of financial year

  3. You better inquire from the Australian Internal Revenue about your question.
