Is the lofty arrogance and holier than thou attitude part of a policeman's training or does it come naturally with the office of constable?Ive often wondered how anyone can address someone as'sir'and actually make it sound like an insult or a derogatory term! Please could someone tell me what part of a policeman's(or woman's)job makes them feel they are more valuable to society than say a deep sea fisherman or a steel erector, who's job is even more dangerous and in my opinion just as important.

  1. They get brainwashed that way at cop school

  2. It's all just your opinion.  I won;t say that I disagree with you, but all you've done is post your uncritical assumptions of who's more important and who's more arrogant.  If you've just been robbed and beaten, you're not going to call for a deep-sea fisherman, and there are plenty of arrogant steel erectors.

  3. An assertive posture and demeanor is a facet of police training, as opposed to the suggestion of arrogance.  However after a number of years working in law enforcement, public behavior, draconian municipality policies, and long, tiresome hours all compile together to make a police officer arrogant, bitter, and cynical.  Sometimes this effect is brief, and a police officer implements other, more healthy coping mechanisms to combat this.  Other times officers wil carry around this attitude for their entire careers and it usually also has an adverse effect on his or her family.  I challnege anyone in another profession to attempt a career in law enforcement and not succumb to bouts of arrogance, cynicism, and overall bitterness.

  4. Cops are public servants if it wasn't for crime the cops would be out of work..What ever happened to the police you could trust? Where in the name of our Lord are the new cops coming from?

  5. OK so you have been naughty. It is a case of looking for fault. I to can call a man sir and a woman ma'am and let them know I mean something else. You were a silly billy then?

  6. Not every police officer is arrogant or acts "holier than thou" so how about not stereotyping all of them just because of your experiences with a few.

There are "bad apples" in every barrel and they aren't all police officers.

Think for a minute about the type of people and the attitudes that police officers deal with on a daily basis. Now multiply that by 8-12hrs a day every day for years...how would you act?

  7. Lack of accountability.

  8. It takes a special kind of person to be a cop. Being lazy, self centered, and arrogant are useful attributes to a successful career in law enforcement. Having a gun for a phallic symbol is right up there too !

  9. Since they get to enforce the law they feel above the law. There are as many dirty cops as there are 100% committed cops.

  10. Yeah, when you're facing down a bunch of drunk tooled up chavs I bet you'll be screaming for the fishermen to rescue you.

Maybe you're mistaking "lofty arrogance" for "spoken through gritted teeth whilst addressing another opinionated, ignorant moron at the wrong end of a 12 hour shift during which time you've been spat at, wrestled with junkies and had to escort a paedophile away from an angry mob... again - and the paperwork is still waiting...

  11. Not all are arrogant, but a large percentage are. Some are bullies hiding behind the uniform. They tend to feel superior to us mere mortals. A classic example happened today a friend was involved in an RTA the Officer who attended was hostile, aggressive, rude and totally insensitive and she was the innocent victim. I would hate to think how he would have treated her if she had been the guilty party. I notice they don't like being told that the public pay their wages either.

  12. I think it gets issued with the uniform, you can always get back by calling them cun*stable works a treat. They tend not to like pig etc and may arrest you for assault (verbal). There was a time long ago,I can just remember it, when coppers were OK and did a good job. But they have blown all that with their gross errors of judgement and fraud.

I think the superiority comes from really being social misfits who find their niche in a uniform but havent ot the guts for the forces.
