Charlotte, who were on a 5 game losing streak, played host to the Denver Nuggets on Friday at Time Warner Cable Arena, Charlotte, NC. Hoping to end their winless drought, Charlotte shot 27.3% from behind the arc – significantly better than Denver’s 2-on-17 - but it still was not enough as for the undersized minnows from North Carolina.
Charlotte opened the scoring with a 3 pointer by Corey Maggette, getting out of the blocks very early.
Denver are known for their fast break offence but a lot of turnovers stopped them from making use of their quick pace tempo. During the second period, the Nuggets cut back on the turnovers to get back into the game. They outscored Charlotte 29-23 in the second period as their fast break offence finally started working. Gerald Henderson was leading the Charlotte cause with 15 points till the break. While on the other end, the Broncos seemed to have been fighting each other in the assists department with several players having more than 5 assists at the half way mark.
The second half followed the usual script with the away side taking a significant lead while the home team trying to make a comeback. Charlotte had managed to cut the lead down to only two 61-59, inside the first five minutes of the third, however at that point the game turned on his head.
With Corey Maggette being hit by a technical foul, Charlotte seemed to have lost all their composure. The visitors made the most of the home team`s lack of placidity as they were able to end the third period on an 9-0 run closing the quarter out on 74-66.
In the fourth, both teams fought very hard but the lack of control from the home side in the closing stages proved to be the key-point for Denver as they were able to hold off the Bobcats for a 99-88 win.
