Arrow keys not working?

i'm really not sure what happened. i used to use the arrow keys on my laptop keyboard to navigate up and down the pages. now when i try that, it doesn't scroll smoothly... a cursor appears and goes down the page line by line. its very annoying and, like i said, it never did that before. i don't remember changing any settings; i've gone back and reset my mouse and touch pad and all that jazz to default, but it didn't help.

maybe the keys are breaking...i lost my '2' key and it went like that...gradually

It is possible that the NUMLOCK is engaged. To test this run notepag and see if the arrow keys print characters when pressed, if so then the numlock is engaged. This is a common fault as it is easy to accidentally press the keys to engage numlock http://www.trilogicuk.co.uk
